Abstract

Library resources are the information-bearing materials that enable the library to fulfill its goals of meeting the information needs of its users. This study examined the accessibility and utilization of library resources by teachers in secondary schools in Giwa Education Zone of Kaduna State, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was two thousand, two hundred and twenty (2,816). A total of three hundred and thirty- eight (338) questionnaires were distributed, and three hundred and thirty-three (333) copies were retrieved from the respondents. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts in Educational Psychology who vetted the items developed. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach‟s Alpha and a value of 0.76. Pearson‟s Product Moment Correlation and one way ANOVA was employed to test the hypotheses at p ≤ 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis revealed that the availability of textbooks, reference materials, and newspapers/magazines significantly influenced utilization of library resources by teachers (p = 0.00). Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that accessibility to textbooks, reference materials, and newspapers/magazines significantly influence utilization of library resources. It was therefore recommended that that worn-out textbooks be replaced and made available for use by teachers. Reference materials should be replaced within some specified period since most of the reference materials are print resources.
